In this article I am going to outline the process of installing SharePoint Foundation 2010 on a Windows 2012 R2 machine for the purpose of deploying Service Manager Self Service Portal.

Install SharePoint Requisites

The first step to be able to install SharePoint 2010 on Windows 2012 R2 is downloading the right installer as SharePoint 2010 is supported on Windows 2012 R2 only on it Service Pack 2 version which can be downloaded here.

While the SharePoint pre-requisites installer should install all required components and features this is not the case when installing on Windows 2012 R2 so requisite software needs to be installed manually, from an elevated PowerShell session launch the following command

Install-WindowsFeature NET-Framework-Core, NET-HTTP-Activation, Net-Non-HTTP-Activ, AS-NET-Framework, AS-Web-Support, AS-TCP-Port-Sharing, AS-HTTP-Activation, AS-MSMQ-Activation, AS-TCP-Activation, AS-Named-Pipes, Web-WebServer, Web-Static-Content, Web-Default-Doc, Web-Dir-Browsing, Web-http-Errors, Web-HTTP-Redirect, Web-ASP-NET, Web-Net-Ext, Web-ASP, Web-CGI, Web-ISAPI-Ext, Web-ISAPI-Filter, Web-Includes, Web-http-Logging, Web-Log-Libraries, Web-Request-Monitor, Web-http-Tracing, Web-Basic-Auth, Web-Windows-Auth, Web-Digest-Auth, Web-Client-Auth, Web-Cert-Auth, Web-Url-Auth, Web-Filtering, Web-IP-Security, Web-Stat-Compression, Web-Dyn-Compression, Web-Mgmt-Console, Web-Scripting-Tools, Web-Mgmt-Service, Web-Mgmt-Compat, Web-Metabase, Web-WMI, Web-Lgcy-Scripting, Web-lgcy-Mgmt-Console, MSMQ-Server, WAS-Process-Model, WAS-NET-Environment, WAS-Config-APIs,Windows-Identity-Foundation

Once necessary Windows features have been installed you need to download and install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Native ClientMicrosoft Sync Framework Runtime 1.0, Microsoft Chart Controls for Microsoft .NET Framework, Microsoft Filter Pack 2.0, Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services ADOMD.NET, Server Speech Platform Runtime, Server Speech Recognition Language en-US, Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services Add-In for SharePoint

Installation of all components is trivial so I will not describe it here just click next and accept all default and you will be up and running in no time.

Choose to install SharePoint in Standalone mode as all components will reside on the same server and anyhow it will be used only to host Service Manager Self Service Portal components

Once installation went through correctly I strongly advice to at least install this SharePoint security update which is available through Microsoft update as it contains fixes for critical security flaws as security should always come first even in a lab environment.

Once all the components are in place you can start deploying Service Manager Self Service Portal which I am going to describe in the next article.
